Facility IT is a discipline lying at the intersection of Building Automation Systems (BAS), Facility Management (FM), and Information Technology (IT). It’s best described as the use of information technology to ensure that the building systems are performing and delivering on the needs of the organization who pay for and rely on the facility.

With the increased likelihood of cyber attacks on critical infrastructure, including buildings, it is increasingly important to secure automation networks. BACnet Secure Connect (BACnet/SC) is a forthcoming networking option that will secure BACnet communication on TCP/IP networks using standard IT technologies that are used in critical applications such as online banking.

BACnet User Group meeting in New England area November 1st
The next free BACnet user group meeting will be on November 1, 2018 at at at Center for Integrated Life Sciences & Engineering at Boston University. This meeting will be focused on Building Security and Facts, Figures and Futures from the World of BACnet Testing.
The purpose of the BACnet User Group is to bring together the local BACnet user community twice a year to share tips and techniques, pains and joys, regarding the use of the BACnet products and technologies. The user group features BACnet experts from Cimetrics, Siemens and Schneider Electric.

Smart-building and IoT technologies are highly fragmented. Greater cooperation among standards bodies, corporations, city governments and other stakeholders is needed so IoT and existing smart-building technology can work together to deliver the full potential of smart cities, according to a Georgia Tech study.
