IoT Cybersecurity Improvement Act calls for deployment standards

The IoT Cybersecurity Improvement Act of 2019, co-sponsored by Reps. Robin Kelly (D-Ill.) and Will Hurd (R-Texas), would require the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to issue guidelines for the secure development, configuration, and management of IoT devices. It would also require the federal government to comply with these NIST standards.

Public Cloud Security Still a Major Concern for Organizations

Several recent reports have highlighted these concerns. The 2019 Cloud Security Report from Cybersecurity Insiders and ISC2 found that 93 percent of organizations are moderately to extremely concerned about public cloud security. More than 90 percent of respondents to a recent cloud security report from Bitglass agreed.

Surprise: Healthcare Organizations Confident in Their Cybersecurity Efforts

Risk management firm LexisNexis Risk Solutions, in conjunction with Information Security Media Group (ISMG), recently announced the results of an online survey they conducted to identify current trends in healthcare cybersecurity. The survey is based on responses from more than 100 participants working within including hospitals, physician group practices, and payers. The survey was conducted over the spring of 2019.

The takeaway? That’s simple: healthcare organizations appear to be way over Confident when it comes to their ability to protect patient data.

NSA Launches Cybersecurity Directorate

The National Security Agency on Tuesday announced the launch of a new division aimed at protecting the country’s intelligence and defense apparatus against foreign cyber threats.

The newly minted Cybersecurity Directorate will bring the agency’s foreign intelligence and cyber operations together under the same roof, helping the agency “operationalize [its] threat intelligence, vulnerability assessments and cyber defense expertise,” according to a post on the NSA website.

Louisiana governor declares state emergency after local ransomware outbreak

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards has activated a state-wide state of emergency in response to a wave of ransomware infections that have hit multple school districts.

The ransomware infections took place this week and have impacted the school districts of three North Louisiana parishes -- Sabine, Morehouse, and Ouachita.
